Mu Phi Epsilon Dallas Alumni Chapter Scholarship

Scholarship award is open to all South Central 2 schools.

Every year the Dallas Alumni chapter awards one deserving music-scholar a $500 scholarship to be used at the student’s discretion. It is available to all collegiate members of the South Central 2 District. A panel of three-four Dallas Alumni members will judge the applicants and select a top candidate to represent each school. From those chosen, we will select one winner.

The finalists and winner will be REQUIRED to attend our April meeting (Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 11am in Dallas, Texas) and give a performance to receive their award.

Collegiate members of South Central 2 are invited to join us for lunch, and/or give a performance as well.

Award: $500

Eligibility: Must be an ACTIVE member of any Mu Phi Epsilon chapter in South Central 2. Member must be in good standing at the time of application review. Juniors and Seniors (by hours) are welcome to apply.

Criteria: Scholarship based on academic record, contributions to Mu Phi chapter, and service to the community, and written recommendations. Tie-breaker in case of split decision will be financial need. Award MAY be split if desired by Alumni chapter.

Requirement of Finalists: Perform at April Dallas Alumni meeting on Saturday April 12, 2025, at 11 am. Meeting will be at home of Nancy Laine in Fairview.

Materials needed to apply:

- Scholarship Questionnaire
- Transcript, with total GPA, and separate calculations for music GPA and ‘other’ GPA
- Two recommendations, one from the applicant’s primary musical instructor, the other is at the student’s
discretion, however a recommendation from a professional musician or member of music faculty is preferred and will be given more consideration.

Recommendations must be emailed directly to the Scholarship committee head below (subject line should
include “Recommendation for XXX”), or mailed from the recommender directly to the president with their signature on the letter seal.
- Brief letter describing financial need (optional).

Winners will be notified via their contact preference on or around April 5, 2024.

Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition

One winner is awarded a two-year contract for expense-paid concert/recital appearances sponsored by the Foundation and chapters of Mu Phi Epsilon. Also included are:
1) a solo recital at the triennial Mu Phi Epsilon International Convention
2) local and national publicity
3) an honorarium of $200 for each performance and
4) presentation of community service programs

One alternate winner is named. All finalists receive a Claudette Sorel cash award of $500.

Winners

2024

Emily O'Brien, clarinet

In 2024 the scholarship was awarded to Emily O’Brien, a junior clarinet major from UNT, who also plays piano, flute, sax and guitar.

A native of England, she has been in the US since 2010 and plans to get a Masters degree in the New York-New Jersey area. She has been president and historian of Phi Tau, and currently is performing in the pit for Les Miz at the Music Hall. Her fellow chapter members are busy today hosting an on-campus event for the students they have been tutoring virtually all year. She performed two movements of the Suite #1 for clarinet solo by Michelle Mangani.

Clara is a senior at Texas A&M Tarleton in Stephenville. She is president of the Delta Pi chapter.

Talia Dugan, clarinet

At our Zoom meeting in April Talia Dugan performed Burgmüller's “Duo for Clarinet and Piano,” accompanied by her mother, Renee.

She has been active in the Phi Psi chapter as well as the Baylor Band and the Waco Symphony. She's now home in Portland, Oregon where she is teaching remotely and plans a summer wedding

Michael Ramirez & Mason Bynes performed two songs from Michael’s song cycle “Loving” accompanied by pianist Jeongmi Yoon. These songs are the first two of three he has written so far with a goal of writing and producing a musical based on the story of the bi-racial Virginia couple named Loving who broke the law in marrying.
